November 8th & 9th: Mexico to Guatemala

At the Guatemala border

Sunday we woke bright and early ready to do paperwork and cross the border! We had breakfast at our hotel, just across the road from the Mexican immigration office. We checked the bikes out of Mexico and headed up the road to the Guatemala border to complete more paperwork. By noon we were ready to ride! On the Guatemalan side, we are riding CA-1. THE Pan American Highway!

Guatemala is nothing but windy and twisty roads. The views of the mountains and volcanoes are breathtaking. My ears popped several times climbing in altitude.

We rode about 100 miles in before we got a hotel for the night.

Monday, we headed towards Lake Atitlan, which has been called the most beautiful place in the world. And it sure is! However, it was the most difficult ride I’ve ever done in my life. We went left when we should have gone right and ended up on a steep, windy gravel road unlike anything else. And we all did it on heavy Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Once we got out of that hell of a road, we winded our way around the lake to Santiago and met Mattieu, our boat taxi man who showed us where to park and took us to the most amazing villa across from Santiago. The house is solar-powered and off-grid, and the gardens are so beautifully manicured. We plan to stay here and rest and relax for the next 3 days.

Took a wrong turn and ended up on this steep gravel road.

I am most thankful today for my team. I don’t know what I would do without Brian and Jason. We all are encouraging and supporting each other, and today I needed it!

We rode another 100 miles today. Dirty Larry is filthy, yet handling very well
