November 29th: Tragedy Strikes Again
Today, we left Bogota and started heading west. Bogota, the capital of Colombia, is a pretty large city and has some crazy drivers. You better go or get out of the way. Even on Sunday, traffic was heavy.
Once we got out of the city, the roads were in wonderful shape. We headed west into the Cordillera Central range in the Andean region of Colombia. All I can say is wow! The mountains are beautiful. The roads are windy. Very windy. I did not keep up with the boys today. Mostly because I am not comfortable passing in some of these turns. Even without passing, some trucks come into oncoming traffic because the roads are windy and narrow. It will get your heart racing, that’s for sure.
I hit a dog today. I saw this dog jump off the stone railing ledge and run straight at me. I hit him in the face with my right highway peg. All I could think of was “me or the dog” and I chose me. This is the 3rd damn dog I’ve hit in my riding career and the 2nd one on this trip (basically the same thing happened in El Salvador). When I told the boys, Brian said “Well, that’s what you do.” It helped light the mood, but I still feel terrible about it.
We stopped for the night in a small town called Cajamarca.
139 miles today.
