Photographing whitewater rafting tours with True North Outpost

Please excuse my complete lack of blog content for a while. Big things have been happening, like spending most of my summer in my absolute favorite place around: Michigan’s majestic Upper Peninsula.

Did you know that only 100 miles north of Green Bay, Wisconsin you can find some of the best class III and IV whitewater river conditions in the Midwest?! I didn’t know this either, and what a treasure it is!

Class III and IV rapids can be found along the Piers Gorge segment of the Menominee River.

This summer, I had the great honor of being one of the photographers for True North Outpost in Norway, Michigan hired to capture their whitewater rafting tours. Now, most people think you have to travel West to the Colorado River or east to the Gully River in West Virginia, when in fact Michigan and Wisconsin has some big water that you’re going to want to experience.

Mishicot Falls is the biggest waterfall in Piers Gorge, which offers about a 12 foot drop.

The Piers Gorge segment of the Menominee River offers some of the best whitewater conditions in the area. This dam released river produces large class III and class IV whitewater for an incredible rafting experiences along the Michigan/Wisconsin border.

Hydraulic dams control the water flow upriver, making for some epic rapids all summer long.

Piers Gorge is named for its natural rocky “piers” that the river flows over, resulting in these super fun rapids. Tours generally take 2-3 hours, depending on how fast water is being released from the dam up stream.
