November 18th: Lessons from the road (so far)

On the Pan American Highway in Costa Rica

The road gives you a lot of time to think. Here’s what’s been on my mind, so far…

  • Why is Spanish spoken so fast?!?! Slow down!!! My favorite saying is “Repeato, pour favor.”

  • The country wave is not just a US thing. It is an Americas thing. Everyone waves!

  • Blinkers have multiple meanings. It is not only a turn signal but vehicles you are following use it as an indicator that it is clear for you to pass them.

  • The majority of people in the world are good and kind people. We have met so many wonderful people along our journey who have offered great advice, Spanish language teachings, and kindness.

  • Humidity is a motherfucker. I have been a sweaty mess most days like never before! Mucho agua necessito!!

  • SPF 70 is about the right coverage for this Blanco American. And long sleeves.

  • Seeing three large Harleys roll by in Central America is the equivalent of seeing a (inset any ridiculously high-end car here) in any small town USA.

  • Pot holes the size of Texas must be avoided at all costs. They will jump up when you least expect them.   Beds in cheap hotels/hostels throughout Central America are small and extremely firm. Like sleeping on a 2x4 comfortably.

  • If you don’t like huevos rancheros, you are in trouble.

  • When in doubt, order the pollo.

  • A friendly smile is sometimes all you need.

  • Central Americans are very resourceful people. They do not let anything go to waste.

  • Emissions tests must not exist in Central America.

  • If you don’t like Mariachi music, well best of luck to you because it is everywhere.

  • The horn is a very popular vehicle accessory. It is not going out of style any time soon.

  • The metric system is confusing at first. I hope I am not speeding too badly.

  • Border crossings will try your patience over and over again.

  • Look before you step. Especially in heavy stray dog areas.

  • Stray dogs are pretty cool except in El Salvador. There, they are not smart animals.

  • Thank a trucker. They go through a lot to deliver goods for all of us.

  • Check the bathroom for TP before you begin. Or, better yet, BYOTP.

  • A shower at the end of the day is a great thing. Even if it is a cold shower.

  • Rain showers are brief but usually heavy. Once it clears, look for the rainbow, because they are amazing!

  • Don’t look too much at the scenery (see comment above re: potholes).

  • Be smart, not naive.
